Srivilliputhur Sri Periya Perumal Temple, the abode of Sri VatapathraSayee

Srivilliputhur is a twin temple town dedicated to the Lord Sri VatapathraSayee and Sri Rangamannar with his consort ANDAL. Srivilliputhur Temple is unique for it's rich architectural heritage. The exquisite images, sculptures, carvings and drawings adorn the temple beautifully. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams. The main attraction of temple is RAJAGOPURAM with 11 tiers and 192 feet height. The symbol of Temple Rajagopuram is being used as Official EMBLEM of Tamilnadu Government.

The temple of Srivilliputhur has two shrines and both the temples are faced in the east direction.
  1. Sri VatapathraSayee Temple, the abode of VatapathraSayee(Lord Vishnu) with his consort Goddess Bhudevi and Sridevi.
  2. Sri Andal(Goda Devi) Temple, the abode of Sri Rangamannar with his consort Sri Andal(an incarnation of Goddess Bhudevi).
Sri VatapatraShayi Temple(Sri Periya Perumal Sannidhi), Srivilliputhur:
The presiding deity Sri VatapathraSayee(Lord Vishnu) is in recline posture with his consorts Goddess Bhudevi and SriDevi. The other deities in the sanctum sanctorum(Garbha Griha - గర్భ గుడి) are Sage Bhrugu,  Markandeya, Narada Maharshi, Garuda.

The Sanctum Sanctorum is two tired. Sri Lakshmi Narasimha shrine is on the ground floor and one has to climb a few steps to reach the shrine of Sri VatapatrSayee which is situated in the upper tier. 
The unique aspect of Sri Vatapathra Sayee Temple is that the idol of Mula Virat, Sri Vatapathrasayee is made of Sudhai(sand monds). .

The shrine of Sri VatapathraSayee is located adjacent to Sri Andal shrine.These two temples are connected each other by the flower garden in between them. One can reach Sri Andal temple from Sri VatapatraSayee temple through this garden.
The VadapathraSayee Temple is also called as Periya Perumal Temple. 

Important Festivals of Sri VatapathraSayee Temple:
  1. The most important festival of the temple is Periya Perumal Annual Brahmotsavam which is being celebrated in the Purattasi month(September/October) of Tamil.
  2. The other important festival being celebrated in this temple is Vaikunta Ekadasi in the month of Margazhi(December/January) and Garuda Sevai Mahotsavam on all saturdays in the Tamil month of Purattasi.
